UST WENT home with a gold and three bronze medals in the 17th Sandugo University Games (UniGames) at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City last Oct. 22-28.

The undefeated Male Tennisters gave UST its lone championship after dethroning the National University. Their female counterparts were tied at third spot with the Lady Tennisters of the University of the Philippines.

“The UniGames was a success not only because we won, but also because we got to know what we needed to work on to prepare ourselves in the coming second semester of the UAAP,” lawn tennis coach Gabby Remegio said.

It was an unlikely ending for the Lady Tracksters as they slid from second to third place this year. The Male Tracksters failed to enter the Top 3.

In volleyball, the Tiger Spikers beat the Adamson University Falcons in four sets, 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18, to capture the bronze medal. The Lady Spikers dropped to fourth place after a nail-biting 20-25, 25-12, 25-23, 17-25, 9-15 loss to Adamson.

The Growling Tigers, who finished second in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, finished at fifth place after absorbing a 56-58 loss to the reigning five-time UAAP champions Ateneo Blue Eagles. The Tigresses got the boot early in the elimination round.

In football, the Lady Booters succumbed to the De La Salle University, 0-1, and settled for fourth place.

“The UniGames served as one of the training grounds of the athletes who will compete in the second semester sports in the UAAP,” said Fr. Emerito de Sagon, O.P., director of the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics. “But their performance in the UAAP will be much more serious and intense because it’s what they’re focusing on.” Hedrix Ar-ar C.
