13 September 2013, 1:58 p.m. – IVAN Reyes’ game-tying layup went halfway in, only to fall out as the UST Tiger Cubs fell short against the University of the East (UE), 48-51, and bowed out of UAAP Season 76 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University today.
The Tiger Cubs finished with a 4-10 win-loss card with their fifth-straight defeat.
The Cubs were down, 38-48, halfway through the fourth quarter when Reyes sparked a furious rally for UST, highlighted by Ice Dandan’s four-point play in the last 90 seconds, to tie the count at 48.
UST forced the Junior Warriors to commit a turnover in the next possession, but could not capitalize on the other end as Dandan was caught traveling while trying to beat the shot clock.
UE forward Jonas Briones then converted a tough layup in front of three defenders to give the Junior Warriors a 50-48 lead with 8.5 seconds left.
The Cubs had a chance to tie, but Reyes’ undergoal stab went in and out as time expired.
”It’s our last game and we really wanted to win, pero ganu’n talaga. We’ll bounce back next year,” said coach Allan Ascue, who failed to steer his team to the Final Four this year after finishing third last season.
Dandan paced the Cubs with 13 points, nine from beyond the arc, and six rebounds. Ivan Reyes added eight markers.
