31 January 2014, 2:30 p.m. – THE UST Male and Female Fencers collected three bronze medals in the individual events on the first day of the UAAP fencing tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University Thursday.
Noelito Jose made it to the semifinals of the men’s individual epee tournament en route to the bronze. Teammate Bernardino Arribas also made it to the Final Four and finished with another bronze medal.
Jose faltered against his De La Salle University counterpart in the semifinals, 13-15. Arribas likewise lost in his Final Four bout against University of the East (UE), 13-15.
UE eventually took home the gold medal.
In the women’s individual foil tourney, Dyren Peñaflor was upset by her Far Eastern University (FEU) opponent, 15-14. Peñaflor was ahead by at least four marks and a point shy of closing the match to advance to the finals, before her FEU foe caught up.
“‘Di ko ineexpect yun. Kaya niya (Peñaflor) yun (FEU) eh, dati na niyang tinatalo. Malaki yung lamang, kaya lang di siya nakinig sa ‘kin. Siguro naguguluhan na rin,” foil coach Emerson Segui said. “Kailangan pang i-improve yung discipline nila.”
Chinee Macaraig finished at fifth place also in the women’s individual foil tournament.
The fencing tournament continues tomorrow, Jan. 31, 8 a.m., at the same venue. Ralph Joshua D.R. Hernandez
