UST halts Davao’s streak in V-League

27 April 2014, 8:20 p.m. – THE UST Golden Tigresses banked on the solid efforts of Carmela Tunay and team captain Pamela Lastimosa to repulse the erstwhile undefeated Davao Lady Agilas, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17, in the Shakey’s V-League tournament at The Arena in San Juan Sunday.

UST clinched its third straight victory to improve to second place alongside the Lady Agilas with an identical 3-1 win-loss record.

In the fourth set, UST utilized its height advantage after Loren Lantin and Marivic Meneses scored with two consecutive blocks, 16-10.

Lastimosa later unleashed back-to-back hits to establish UST’s biggest lead of the match, 21-12.

“Hindi nag-click ‘yung depensa namin nung first two sets. Medyo sumakit ‘yung left knee ng main setter (Rhea Dimaculangan) namin kaya pinasok ko na si Loren (Lantin),” coach Odjie Mamon said.

Tunay topscored for the Tigresses with a game-high 20 points, while Lastimosa finished with 19 markers.

Down by a point in the second set, UST unleashed 7-2 spurt, four of which came from Tunay, to establish a 17-13 advantage.

Jocemer Tapic led the Davaoenas with 17 points while May Agton added 16.

The Golden Tigresses will next clash with the University of Perpetual Help-System Dalta on April 29, 4 p.m. at the same venue. Karl Cedrick G. Basco
