September 27, 2015, 9:11p.m. – THE UST Shuttlers got a beating at the hands of their respective opponents in the UAAP Season 78 badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Badminton Hall Sunday.
The Female Shuttlers suffered a heartbreaking loss to Far Eastern University, 0-5, while the Male Shuttlers tasted a 3-2 defeat against the Ateneo De Manila University.
FEU’s Thea Pomar demolished Anna Patricia Barredo, 13-21, 18-21.
Barredo and Steffi Aquino also fell to the Lady Tamaraws in their doubles match.
Henrick Peralta had the chance to win it for UST in the men’s play, but Ateneo’s Hanz Bernardo overpowered him in an quick 12-21, 14-21 loss.
Male Shuttlers Mark Sotea and partner Paolo Darios made quick work of Rjan Mangubat and Patrick Gecosala, 21-14, 21-19.
The Sotea-Darios tandem imposed an early 14-7 lead in the opening set before igniting a 6-4 run to build a 20-11 cushion.
Paul Pantig drew first blood against Ateneo in an exciting three set action, 21-14, 21-23, 21-17.
Both the Male and Female Shuttlers now hold an identical 2-3 win-loss record.
“Siguro nagkataon lang na hindi maganda ‘yung performance ng mga bata.
Parang [bumimitaw sila] sa dulo ng game,” UST head coach Noli Cafe told the Varsitarian.
