October 4, 2015, 3:26p.m. – THE UST Growling Tigresses suffered a 56-67 beating in the hands of the De La Salle University Lady Archers at the end of the first round of the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle gym, Sunday.
The Tigresses had a rough shooting day as they only converted eight of their 33 free throws. They also had 30 turnovers.
UST had momentum going into the fourth quarter trailing La Salle by just one point, 43-44. But the Lady Archers took charge with a 9-2 run to build a seven point lead, 46-53.
The Tigresses tried to fight back, but team captain Maica Cortes fouled out and the deficit ballooned to double digits.
Cortes had another double-double performance with 13 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out. Mariell Isanan also had a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards for UST.
Aracelle Abaca led La Salle with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
“Nawala ang coordination ng team pati ang anger sa laro. Nag kanya-kanya sila at nagsisisihan sa loob,” Tigresses head coach Chris Cantonjos told the Varsitarian.
UST will open the second round next Sunday, however the league has yet to finalize the matchups. Philip Martin L. Matel
