Oct. 1 2016, 6:46 p.m. – DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University got the better of the UST Growling Tigers, 79-72, in a rematch of last year’s UAAP men’s basketball finals at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday.

UST trimmed a 14-point deficit in the payoff period to seven after back-to-back baskets from team captain Louie Vigil. But Tamaraw Raymar Jose converted an and-one in the ensuing play to bring the lead back to double digits.

A Vigil triple with a little over one minute remaining in the game cut FEU’s lead to six, 69-75, but the lead was too big to overcome.

Vigil led the Tigers with 16 points while Marvin Lee added 13.

“These past few games, we’ve always started out slowly. Yung starting five iniiba ko na nga. Lagi namang ganoon. Humahabol. Kaya lang laging kinakapos,” UST head coach Boy Sablan said.

Jojo Trinidad, who sank three straight triples at the start of the third quarter en route to FEU pulling away, had a game-high of 17 markers. Jose had a solid performance of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tamaraws came out firing on all cylinders at the start of the game with a 13-0 run, including three and-ones and a four-point play from Trinidad.

UST regrouped in the second period following a Renzo Subido scoop shot to close the gap, 22-23. But the Tamaraws repulsed the Tigers’ run with their offensive rebounding, coupled with UST’s missed attempts to lead 42-29 at the end of the first half.

UST shot a decent 43.1 percent clip from the field but muffed 10 of its 13 attempts from downtown and went 7-of-14 from the foul line.

The Tigers remain at sixth place with a 2-4 record while FEU improved to 4-2.

The Tigers will face the Adamson University Falcons on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2 p.m., at the same venue. Philip Martin L. Matel
