Growling Tigresses nip FEU

Oct. 1 2016, 4:56 p.m. – THE UST Growling Tigresses weathered a furious Far Eastern University rally to notch their second win, 65-61, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday.

Back-to-back triples by Ruby Portillo and Loraine Capilit halted the Lady Tamaraws, who stormed back from a 17-point deficit.

Shanda Anies 15 points and 13 rebounds for UST while Ann Gandalia chipped in 13 markers. Capilit provided spark off the bench, finishing with 10 points. 

“Hindi pwedeng mas less ang intensity, kasi nung second half we were playing not to lose,” Tigresses head coach Haydee Ong told The Varsitarian.

“Hindi naging aggressive, pero we are lucky that we got the win.”

UST broke the game wide open with a 14-2 run in the final four minutes to lead 35-22. 

The Tigresses’ lead grew to 17 in the third frame, 41-25, but FEU ignited a 17-5 blitz at the start of the payoff period to cut its deficit to two.

UST will face Adamson University on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 8 a.m., at the same venue. Ralph Edwin U. Villanueva
