Nov. 15 2016, 10:01 p.m. – The Growling Tigers may have finished last in the UAAP men’s basketball wars but UST is in the lead for another UAAP general championship.

UST has scored 124 points overall, 20 points ahead of defending champion De La Salle University.

“The University will survive even without a basketball team,” Ermito de Sagon, director of the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, told the Varsitarian in an interview in January.

With the first half of the tournament coming to a close, UST already has four gold medals, bagging back-to-back championships in beach volleyball while taking home two more gold medals in the men’s table tennis and men’s taekwondo.

UST did not win medals in badminton and swimming but poomsae, women’s taekwondo and women’s table tennis contributed three silver medals.

La Salle, which has won the overall crown thrice in the last four years, took home two gold, two silver and three bronze medals for 104 points. The Green Archers are also the favorite to win the men’s basketball championship.

The judo tournament, which has been dominated by UST, will kick off on Nov. 19.

The Male Judokas will try to bounce back after surrendering their crown last year while the Female Judokas are gunning for their third-straight championship. Delfin Ray M. Dioquino
