Nov. 15 2016, 4:34 p.m. – THE University of the East Junior Warriors broke their 29-game losing streak with a 87-77 beating of the UST Tiger Cubs in their UAAP encounter at the Filoil Flying V Arena Tuesday.
The Junior Warriors, who last won in 2013 also against UST, fended off a furious third quarter run by the Cubs as Dustin Angeles buried a dagger trey to give UE an 85-72 lead with just 1:05 left in the game.
“Hindi na-follow ang plans yesterday. Nagising lang noong third and fourth. Noong bumawi tayo, kinapos na. Ang plano kasi, lahat ng point guard ng UE, ipu-pushout natin,” UST head coach Chris Cantonjos told the Varsitarian.
UST trailed by as much as 20 points in the third period before igniting a 19-8 run to cut the deficit, 60-69.
An 18-4 run in the second frame gave the Junior Warriors a 42-25 halftime lead.
Inand Fornillos led the Tiger Cubs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Miguel Ratuiste added 16 markers and 12 boards.
Angeles topscored for UE with 20 points while Rey Balundo added 19.
The winless Cubs will face face De La Salle-Zobel on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the same venue.
