The UST Male Woodpushers kept the top spot after besting the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 3.5-.5, in the Round 6 of the UAAP Season 85 men’s chess tournament at the FEU Tech Gym on Saturday, Dec. 3. 

UST’s rookie Mark Gerald Reyes made a successful debut after dominating Paolo Villa in a quick 26-move play using the King’s Indian Defense. 

Lee Roi Palma used the Slav defense to defeat Ateneo’s Hans Reyes in 26 moves, while Antonio Almodal III outsmarted Ateneo’s Candidate Master Paul Matthew Llanillo in 50 moves. 

Julius Gonzales and Ateneo’s Khalil Kis-ing settled for a draw after 68 moves. 

The Tiger Woodpushers end their Round 6 in a dominant fashion after tallying a total of 20.5 points, while Ateneo placed second to the last after gathering six points. 

In the women’s play, the UST Lady Woodpushers bowed to the defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs, 1-3.

NU accumulated a total of 22.5 match points to snatch the top seed while UST tumbled to fifth seed with 16 points to end the Round 10 of the tournament.

UST’s Jamaica Marie Lagrio and rookie Rohanisah Buto settled for draws which provided a single point for UST. 

The UST Male Woodpushers will next face the Adamson Soaring Falcons, while the UST Lady Woodpushers will go against the De La Salle University at the same venue on Sunday. John Peter L. Cajayon.
