The UST Golden Sox ended the first round winless after submitting to the UP Fighting Maroons, 11-3, in the UAAP Season 85 baseball tournament at the UP Diliman Baseball Field on Sunday.

The Golden Sox stayed at the bottom with a 0-5 win-loss record.

Down by six in the top of the seventh inning, 1-7, the Golden Sox committed a costly fielding error that led to Fighting Maroon Ian Mercado’s three-run homer, 10-1.

UP’s Mark Tuballas converted a run off Lorenzo De Castro’s left-field fly in the top of the eighth inning to bury UST, 11-2.

Golden Sox Adrian Agular hit a ground ball that sent Steven Dominguez to home plate to allow UST’s final home run in the bottom of the final inning, 11-3.

After a disappointing round, UST team captain Mhigheil Cerda said that the Golden Sox need to have more focus in the game coming into the second round.

Sa nakita ko po sa team namin, kulang kami sa pagkakaisa tapos presence of mind palagi. ‘Yung signal ni coach ‘di namin nasusunod, lumulutang kami sa laro,” Cerda told the Varsitarian.

After going scoreless in the first three innings, Golden Sox Justine Rosales scored a homer courtesy of Aaron Geronimo’s ground ball RBI in the bottom fourth, 1-3.

UST’s Junel Cruz added another run in the bottom seventh after Dominguez launched a flyball into right field, 2-10.

The Golden Sox recorded seven hits and five errors.

The league has not released a schedule for the second round.
