GOLD GLORY: The University of Santo Tomas (UST) emerged as the general champions of the UAAP Season 85 in both collegiate and highschool divisions. UST officials, including IPEA Director Fr. UST continued its dominant UAAP reign after bagging the Season 85 general championship titles in both the seniors and juniors divisions during the closing ceremony of the league’s 85th season on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. 

UST garnered a total of 336 points in the collegiate division built on nine gold, seven silver and three bronze medals. In the high school division, UST amassed a total of 217 points, obtaining eight gold medals, three silver medals, and five bronze medals.

“We are very happy to have these general championship titles in both divisions. UST always lived with the tradition of producing excellent and world-class student-athletes,” IPEA Department Secretary Gigi Kamus said after the awarding ceremonies. 

This is UST’s 46th title in the seniors and 22nd in the juniors, further establishing itself as the winningest school in both divisions. 

UST achieved its sixth consecutive general championship title in the seniors division, while in the juniors division, the school secured its seventh consecutive championship title.

In the seniors division, UST clinched gold in the men’s table tennis, men’s and women’s beach volleyball, women’s athletics, men’s chess, women’s taekwondo (kyorugi), men’s judo, men’s tennis and women’s 3×3 basketball events.

The Tiger Paddlers secured UST’s first gold medal of Season 85 by claiming their third consecutive championship title on Nov. 25.

The UST Tiger Sands and Lady Spikers bagged a golden double for their fourth- and fifth-straight crowns, respectively, in the beach volleyball tournament, which concluded on Nov. 29.

The UST Female Tracksters reclaimed the track and field crown after finishing with 307 points behind a 7-2-8 gold-silver-bronze medal haul on  Dec. 5.

The UST Male Woodpushers dominated DLSU in the men’s chess finals to defend their title on Dec. 17.

The UST Lady Jins ended their six-year title drought after dethroning National University in the women’s taekwondo (kyorugi) tournament on Dec. 16.

The UST Tiger Judokas delivered UST’s last gold for the first semester on Dec. 17.

The UST Male Tennisters completed their Season 85 Cinderella run and ended their 12-year title drought after sweeping the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the men’s tennis tournament finals on Apr. 29. 

The Growling Tigresses captured UST’s final gold after dethroning the NU Lady Bulldogs in the 3×3 women’s basketball event on May 4.

The Tiger Spikers finished with silver after bowing to the NU Bulldogs in the men’s volleyball tournament on May 14. 

The UST Lady Paddlers, UST Tiger Jins, UST Poomsae Jins, UST Lady Judokas, UST Tiger and UST Lady Fencers settled for silver in their respective tournaments.

The Growling Tigresses took home bronze after bowing to the DLSU Lady Archers in their do-or-die match on Dec. 4.

The Tiger Softbelles and UST Lady Tennisters also had bronze finishes in the softball and women’s tennis tournaments, respectively. 

In the overall general championship tally for the collegiate division, De La Salle University finished second with 279 points, while the University of the Philippines settled for third with 260 points.

Ateneo De Manila University, National University, Far Eastern University, Adamson University and University of the East bagged fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.

In the junior’s division, UST’s high-school athletes also earned titles in the girls’ table tennis, boys’ and girls’ swimming, girls’ athletics, boys’ taekwondo (kyorugi), boys’ and girls’ judo, and girls’ beach volleyball tournaments. 

UST also bagged silver medals in the boys’ table tennis, boys’ athletics, and girls’ fencing events.

UST finished third in boys’ and girls’ chess, boys’ football, boys’ fencing, and boys’ beach volleyball. 

De La Salle Zobel placed second in the juniors division with 147 points, while Far Eastern University – Diliman tallied 136 points to complete the podium. 

Under UAAP’s point system, 15 points are given to an event’s champion team, 12 to the second placer and 10 to the third placer. The fourth to eighth placers are given 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points, respectively.

The University of the East will be the host school for the UAAP Season 86 which is expected to start in October.
