THE UST Growling Tigresses cruised to a 93-67 win over the DLSU Lady Archers, extending their winning streak to four in the second round of the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, Oct. 29.

The Tigresses never trailed in the game and led by as many as 36 points.

Holding a 38-27 lead midway through the second quarter, the Tigresses pulled away further with a 12-2 run capped by back-to-back Brigette Santos layups to end the half with a 21-point cushion, 50-29.

Behind by 34 at the end of the third quarter, 81-47, the Lady Archers responded with a 20-12 fourth quarter but it was not enough to even make the game competitive.

UST head coach Haydee Ong commended the evenly distributed offense of the Tigresses as the team dished out 28 assists and five Tigresses scored in double digits.

“This is what we wanted—scoring output for UST is distributed,” she said. “Our defense today is not as consistent as the way I’d want it, but the important thing is we got the win today.”

Team captain Tacky Tacatac paced UST with 17 points, while Santos added 12 points.

Three more Tigresses scored in double digits: Rachelle Ambos had 11 markers, while Tantoy Ferrer and Kent Pastrana scored 10 points apiece.

The Tigresses’ bench played well, scoring 59 points against DLSU’s 36.

Ann Mendoza and Luisa San Juan scored 12 points apiece for DLSU.

UST remained in the second seed tied with  University of the Philippines with similar 7-2 win-loss records, while DLSU dropped to fifth with a 3-6 slate.

The Tigresses will return after a weeklong break to face the National University Lady Bulldogs on Nov. 5, Sunday, 9 a.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.
