Oct. 23, 2016, 8:41 p.m. THE UST Tiger Jins scored twin victories while their female counterparts split their matches in the opening day of the UAAP Season 79 taekwondo tournament at the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle gym Sunday.

The Tiger Jins squeaked past Far Eastern University, 4-3, but went on to annihilate the Ateneo de Manila University, 6-1, in their first two matches.

The Lady Jins nipped  the University of the Philippines, 4-3, but suffered a heartbreaking 2-4 loss against the Lady Tamaraws.

Aries Capispisan secured the winning point in the sudden death match to come victorious for UST over FEU’s Paul Nirombaba after landing a swift kick to the torso, 5-4.

It was all UST against the Blue Eagles as Gian Rubio clinched the Tiger Jins second victory with an 11-7 decision over Leonell Garcia in the fifth game.

In women’s play, Marjelle Sy was on her way to forcing a seventh game for the Lady Jins after leading 4-1 but Chloie Bolinas scored consecutive kicks to the head for a 7-4 comeback win.

“Right now, we’re not performing as expected. Alam natin where we stand. We are not where we are supposed to be. Medyo kabado. Lalo na kapag ang kalaban ay nalalamangan. It’s more of their mindset,” UST assistant coach Gershon Bautista told the Varsitarian.

Taekwondo action will continue tomorrow as the Tiger Jins face National University and the De La Salle University while the Lady Jins clash with the Lady Bulldogs and Ateneo at the same venue.
