UST Jins dominate national taekwondo meet Day 1

THE UST Jins harvested 10 medals on the first day of the 2019 National Carlos Palanca Jr. Memorial Taekwondo Championships at the Mall of Asia Music Hall Saturday.

UST collected six medals in the poomsae tournament, while the the Junior Tiger and Lady Jins added four in the juniors’ taekwondo competition.

Rodolfo Reyes Jr., Jerel Dalida and Adrian Ang struck gold in the men’s senior team category after scoring 8.385, while the pair of Dalida and Pauline Jubelag added another gold after a 7.67 output in the mixed freestyle pair category.

“Even the during the holiday break, they had their self-training programs. We never stopped training even after the UAAP,” head coach Rani Ortega told the Varsitarian.

Ang and Aljana Erece settled for silver in the mixed pair category after tallying 7.700 points, behind De La Salle University’s Raphael Myka and Zyla Santiago with 8.005 points.

Darius Venerable snagged silver in the men’s freestyle individual category after registering 8.34 points, before teaming up with Vincent Rodriguez, Miguel Balalad, Rica Paitone and Faith Ragasa for another silver in the mixed freestyle group category with 7.90 markers.

In the juniors’ division, UST’s Dave Labaton defeated La Salle Greenhills’ Piolo Jazmines in the finals of the men’s junior welterweight division, while Reign Ragutana prevailed over Viscaya TKD Stars’ Kesley Orotea in the women’s junior middleweight division finals.

The competition resumes today, Sunday, 1 p.m., at the same venue.
