UST Woodpushers: poised and checked

WITH barely a week before the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Chess competition, the UST Male Woodpushers are raring to improve on their bridesmaid finish last season.

As part of their rigid off-season training, the Male Woodpushers have played tune-up games against six-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champions, the San Sebastian College (SSC) Woodpushers.

Game of the generals once conquered metro universities

BACK in the 1970s, chess was not the only board game that Thomasians were interested in.

The immense popularity of the Game of the Generals likewise fascinated the Thomasian community.

As proof of this, the first UST Game of the Generals Tournament, which was sponsored by The Varsitarian in cooperation with the UST Coop Restaurant, opened on July 7, 1974.

UST Shuttlecockers shines in JVC National Championships

HOPING to improve on their third-place finish last UAAP season, the UST Male Shuttlecockers showed their fine form during the JVC National Championships last June 6-9 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.

After breezing through the eliminations, the tandem of RP Junior Team mainstays Ricky Bartolome and Reynaldo Selga ran out of gas in their championship match against the country’s no. 1 ranked duo of Arolas Amahit and Ian Piencienaves, 9-15, 10-15, to bag second place in the men’s doubles competition.

USTMAC: Teaching Thomasians the art of discipline

THE TIMES are filled with danger, and the Thomasian community is not spared of the evil that may lurk in every corner.

So, in order to counter the various threats that may come, Thomasians need to learn self-defense.

And this is exactly why the UST Martial Arts Club (USTMAC) was formed.

Established by Thomasian Carlo Laserna, USTMAC has spearheaded the promotion of martial arts in the campus since 2000.

Lady Spikers fails to avert FEU sweep

THEIR hope of a UAAP Women’s Volleyball crown went straight to the dustbin as the UST Volleybelles failed to prevent the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws from sweeping the tournament, losing in four sets, 19-25, 25-20, 12-25, 24-26, last Sept. 22 at the UP College of Human Kinetics Gym.

With the UST Lady Spikers still groping for form, FEU, anchored on the fearsome tandem of Monica Aleta and Joanne Bunag, pounded the Tigresses to take the first set, 25-19.

UST trails DLSU in UAAP race

WITH only three championships to show after the first semester, University of Santo Tomas (UST) trails De La Salle University (DLSU) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) general championship race with its accumulated 99 points compared to the latter’s 104.

UST’s domination of both the men’s and women’s table tennis and men’s volleyball tournament, plus several runner-up finishes, proved to be enough to keep it in pace with league-leading DLSU.

Tigresses lose to Lady Archers

IN THEIR penultimate game of the season, the UST Growling Tigresses lost a no-bearing 76-61 decision against the undefeated De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers last September 11 at the UST Gym.

The Lady Archers pulled away early, racing to a huge 28-10 lead behind 10 points from forward Princess Mariano in the first quarter. Mariano spearheaded DLSU’s offensive thrust as she proved to be unstoppable on the lower block with three consecutive baskets to open the match.

… and then there were four

THE UST Growling Tigers and De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers renew their historic rivalry on the hard court. Both are owners of “four-peat” records in the past two decades. UST accomplished this from 1994 to 1997 while the Archers are now looking for their fifth straight basketball plum. With the roles reversed, the Growling Tigers would want nothing more than to stop De La Salle from completing a record-breaking “five-bulous” quest.
