WITH the race for overall supremacy still in contention, the Lady jins gave UST a much-needed lift as they won their third consecutive crown in the UAAP Women’s Taekwondo Tournament last Feb. 9 and 13 at the UP College of Human Kinetics Gymnasium.

Fielding in the formidable squad composed of SEA Games silver medallist Kalindi Tamayo, 2001 UAAP women’s MVP Daleen Cordero, Josephine Strachan, Diorlyn Papelera, Nancy Remollena, Anne Resurreccion and Joy Handog, the UST Lady jins hardly encountered any resistance on their way to their third straight championship.

THE ECCLESIASTICAL Faculties’ football dynasty continues to reign.

Cementing its niche on the University’s Intramurals history, the Ecclesiastical Faculties’ Football Team made it five in a row after another sensational title romp as it demolished the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), 4-0 in the final play date of the Intercollegiate Football Tournament at the UST Field last Feb. 18.

Lady Fencers repeat silver

CARVING its legitimate niche in the UAAP Fencing community, the UST Fencing Team delivered an impact performance with its silver and bronze finishes in the men’s and women’s divisions last Feb. 1 to 2 at the Philsports Fencing Hall.

Lady Shuttlecockers bag second place in UAAP

FROM non-contenders, the UST Badminton Team has come a long way. The Female and Male Shuttlecockers delivered silver and bronze performances in the conclusion of the UAAP Badminton Tournament last Feb. 10 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

Failing to zero in on the championship the day before after sorry losses against fancied teams, the UST Shuttlecockers went out in grand fashion as they outclassed their respective final assignments.

Tiger Batters settle for deadlock vs Archers

COMING off an impressive 20-0 blowout against the National University Bulldogs, the UST Golden Sox settled for a draw against title-contender De La Salle University, 4-4, last Jan. 13 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Earning a 4-2 record midway through the tournament, the Golden Sox are already a cinch to make the Final Four, prompting UST baseball head coach Jeffrey Santiago to experiment with his current line-up.

Push-overs no more

BADMINTON is one sport UST has not been able to dominate in the UAAP. It was included in the league only six years ago, but glory in the sport has been elusive to the España-based Shuttlecockers. In the first years of its entry in the UAAP competition, UST languished in the cellar against other powerhouse teams in the league.

After a humiliating 1999 season, which saw the women’s team placed sixth and the men’s squad relegated to seventh, changes had to be made to arrest the skid.

Queens of the Track

DESPITE the absence of their ace player and national team member Narcisa Atienza, the UST Lady Tracksters still found themselves on top of the competition, winning their third straight UAAP championship during the athletics competitions held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Track Stadium last Dec. 9 to 12.

Even without Atienza, who had to sit out this season due to academic deficiencies, the UST Lady Tracksters landed on top of the medal standings with 20 after four days of intense competition.

UAAP reverses ruling, La Salle still within striking distance

THE UNIVERSITIES Athlethic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board reversed its decision after De La Salle University protested a “rule change” in the computation of general championship points for the athletics competition last December. The “rule change” prevented two of the Taft-based tracksters teams from finishing both in second place.

Softbelles toy with Falcons

COSTLY defensive lapses from Adamson and a dominant showing from second-year pitcher Esmeralda Tayag lifted the UST Golden Softbelles past the defending champion Adamson Lady Falcons, 8-0, last Jan. 12 at the UST Baseball Field.
