Actress named UST courtside voice

POPULAR teen actress Diana Marie “Dimples” Romana will be UST’s official courtside reporter in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament this season.

Romana, a 17-year-old Tourism sophomore from the College of Education, was chosen by Studio 23, the network carrier of the UAAP’s 65th season.

Dimples underwent a selection process composed of a screening committee from ABS-CBN to represent UST.

Having student courtside reporters from participating schools was an idea conceptualized by Studio 23 back in the 63rd Season.

Of goldies and shooting stars

Thirty years ago, a historic battle between the hard court stars of UST and the stars of Philippine cinema took place in the home of the then Glowing Goldies. The varsity team of UST squared off against a visiting FPJ All-Star selection. Unfortunately what was supposed to be a game of friendship and camaraderie turned into a frenzied rumble.

With the game drawing to a close, action star and famous movie villain Romy Diaz engaged in a scuffle with spectators after being offended by a harsh remark from one of the students.

Let the games begin

LAST year, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers failed to enter the UAAP Final Four since the format was introduced in 1994. This, after head coach Januario “Aric” Del Rosario decided to bar Cyrus Baguio, Melchor Latoreno, Gilbert Lao, and Kenneth Co from playing .

Del Rosario was compelled to make the difficult decision was because some of those players opted to simply play in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), sacrificing their commitment to UST and more importantly, their studies.

Tennisters thrash DLSU in National Interschool Open

IN ANOTHER display of collegiate tennis brilliance, UAAP Lawn Tennis Champion University of Santo Tomas pounded the De La Salle University Tennisters, 4-0, to take the Interschool tournament title at the National Open Tennis Championship, held in Subic from April 27 to May 11.

In the first singles match, UST’s Francis Venzon defeated De La Salle’s Paolo Olbes, 8-4.

In doubles, Venzon teamed up with Art Thomas Calingasan to turn back Olbes and Johann Guba, 8-6.

A cut above the rest

WHEN the king of the UAAP jungle visited the Queen City of the South last April 20-27, everyone expected no less than an explosive clash – a battle royale among the finest collegiate athletes from all over the country. And when the battle-smoke cleared in this year’s Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) wars, the 29-time over-all champion University of Santo Tomas stood tall above all with its 20 golds, 20 silvers and 20 bronzes.

Lady Booters look good in pre-season rebuilding

EAGER to improve their lukewarm fourth-place finish last season, the UST Lady Booters kicked off their pre-season by upending a pesky Baguio A team, 4-3, to claim the Kick Sand Beach Football Open Tournament last April 28 at Subic Bay, Olongapo City.

Missing the services of four key players, including team captain and national mainstay Alelie Bonifacio, the Tigresses were easily manhandled by Baguio A in the elimination round as they were subdued twice by the three-time defending champions.

Spikers spiked out of beach volleyball meet

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas failed to deliver the necessary killer blows against Far Eastern University, losing a 21-16 decision to the Tamaraws, bidding farewell to their quarterfinals chances and a trip to the islands of Boracay on the final play date of the 6th Nestea Beach Volleyball Intercollegiate Championship last April 7 at the La Salle Greenhills sandcourts in San Juan.

UST and FEU were actually neck-to-neck in the early goings of the match, strategically exchanging points from the onset.

UST conquers UAAP tennis

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas’ UAAP conquest took yet another step with the UST Lady Tennisters, in grand fashion, completing a clean-up of the tournament to claim their first-ever UAAP Women’s Tennis Title last Feb. 3 at the Valle Verde Tennis Courts in Pasig City.

Etching themselves in the league history books, the Lady Tennisters emphatically ruled the tournament by sweeping all their six elimination games.

Lady Booters end season in fourth

THE UST Lady Booters failed to duplicate their last year’s third-place finish after they settled for a draw against the eventual champion Far Eastern University (FEU), 1-1, at the Ateneo Field last Feb. 13.

With the loss, they wound up fourth behind the University of the Philippines’ superior quotient. After the elimination round, UP accumulated 10 points against UST’s 8-point total.

FEU repeated as champions after blasting DLSU, 2-1, last Feb. 17.
