Fencers settle for silver and bronze, again

DESPITE a depleted line-up, the UST Fencers had another silver and bronze showing for the third straight year.

The Sabres saved the men’s team from a medal shutout as they plucked silvers in both the team and individual events. The two silvers were enough to make UST remain in the top three of the men’s competitions.

Sox’s inexperience costs them finals

WITH HALF of the team playing in the pressure-packed finals for the first time, the UST Golden Sox’s could not overcome its inexperience.

The Golden Sox sputtered against the grizzled veterans of the University of the Philippines as they surrendered the title in two games of the best-of-three UAAP baseball finals at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

No contest: UST repeats as overall UAAP champion

WOUNDED in the initial round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the UST Growling Tigers as expected roared back in the second round to win its 31st General Championship, making University of the Philippines and De La Salle University eat their dust with a commanding and unreachable 28-point advantage.

Shuttlecockers end up short

THE ELUSIVE crown will have to wait another year.

UST suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat in the hands of defending champion Far Eastern University, slamming the door on the Tiger Shuttlecockers’ bid for their first ever UAAP badminton title since the sport’s inclusion in 1995.

After an opening day domination of University of the East, 4-1, UST found itself in a position to dislodge powerhouse Far Eastern University last Jan. 25 at the Rizal Badminton Hall.

Thomasian athletes contribute to medal haul in Vietnam SEA Games

ONCE again, Thomasian athletes showed excellent form by bringing home medals from the recent Southeast Asian Games held in Ho Chi Min, Vietnam.

UST contributed to the Philippine cause behind International Chess Master Ronald Dableo who snagged a gold in the chess team event.

Dableo, the UST women’s chess team’s head coach, defeated the likes of fellow Filipino and Grandmaster Bong Villamayor, Grandmaster Adianto Yutut of Indonesia, Grandmaster Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam, and Singapore’s Grandmasters Wong Meng Kong and Shaobin.

Booters winless, Lady Booters slumping

AFTER the first round of the UAAP football season, the UST Growling Booters and the Lady Booters struggled to compile wins in the highly-competitive field.

With a new head coach at the helm, the rebuilding Lady Booters showed so much promise after winning their first game emphatically last Jan. 17 at the Philsports football field, 3-0, over the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Blue Guards. Prized rookie Dorelyn Mendaza struck two goals in that game with veteran halfback/forward Julie Ann Gerona joining her.

Tennisters kiss grandslam hopes goodbye

THEY WERE not used to being the underdogs.

With the odds stacked against them, the task of defeating the UAAP’s top team in three straight games was too much for the defending back-to-back champions UST Tiger Tennisters.

UST could not deliver a repeat performance of its conquest of De La Salle University as the Tigers lost, 2-1, in the championship before a pre-dominant La Salle crowd last Feb.1 at the Rizal Racket Club in Pasig.

Last Jan. 25, UST denied DLSU a sweep of the tournament to set the stage for the championship.

Sunkist-UST’s magical run ends, winless in semi-finals

THEY LIVED and died beyond the arc.

For a while, the Sunkist-UST Tigers seemed headed for a cinderella run in just their maiden season in the recently-concluded Philippine Basketball League, after surprising the league with an impressive five-game winning streak that gave them an 8-4 card and the second slot in the four-team semifinals.

But it turned out that the Tigers’ hot shooting from beyond the arc betrayed them in the semifinals as they bowed out, losing all their last seven games.

Sox eye crown, Lady Batters face champs in semis

IT HAD all the makings of a memorable Sunday baseball game.

The crowd, most of which rooted for the University of the Philippines baseball team, was treated to an intense and drama-filled penultimate game of the UAAP Baseball eliminations last Feb.1 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Park.

UST overtakes DLSU in UAAP over-all race

WHAT seemed like an insurmountable lead by De La Salle in the overall tally for the 66th UAAP general crown became history as the University of Santo Tomas roared back behind four varsity championships and two runner up finishes to seize a four-point lead, 182-178, over its Taft-based counterparts based on an unofficial tally by the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics.
