Mountaineers climb to success

REPRESENTATIVES of the UST Mountaineering Club placed fifth in the Sandugo Adventure Race last April 24, which kicked off in Marikina and ended in San Mateo, Rizal.

Team captain Libert Lomuntad, Prana Escalante, and Anderson Tuginay represented the USTMC-Conquers, the youngest team in the competition, the ages of the members averaging at 20 years.

The one-day race tested the contestants at various outdoor disciplines like running, mountain biking, rapelling, and land navigation.

Karatekas shine

UST ATHLETIC Karate Alliance (UST-AKA) president Juby Ruiz and Alma Cabasal brought home two medals each in the 1st Westin Philippine Plaza Hotel Martial Arts Tournament.

Cabasal topped the 16-17 girls kumite (sparring) category with Ruiz finishing second. Ruiz snatched another silver in the kata (forms) class while Cabasal brought home the bronze that time.

Stefanie Lopez from the School of the Holy Spirit (SHS) received the bronze and the gold medal in the kumite and kata events.

Aqua Fortis delivers

HAVING six women in an 18-man roster was never a disadvantage at all for the determined rowers of the Aqua Fortis Dragon Boat Rowing Team 2004, as they placed third among 87 squads at the 2004 Taipei International Dragon Boat Championship last June 20 - 22.

The “underdogs” just refused to submit to the furious rowers from Thailand, Taiwan, Canada, Australia, South Africa, The United States, Japan Malaysia and many more.

The UST Lady Woodpushers head coach wanted to be the first Filipino to clinch a World Chess Championship (WCC) title, the ultimate in international chess.

Shuttlecockers eye better performance

THIS time, the UST Shuttlecockers hope they won’t end up short.

After reaching only as far as the quarterfinals of the JVC open last year, the UST shuttlecockers are upbeat about their chances in the tournament with the addition of topnotch players into the roster last summer.

Palarong Pambansa champions Lyka Leonor and Kathleen Añasco will try to fill the space vacated by team captain Dianah Barbo, along with Sandy Bangkiles, Czarina Bargo and new recruits Irma Galario and Rose Ann dela Cruz to represent the women’s team in the tournament.

New rule ok’d for UAAP 67

UNIVERSITIES Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) coaches now have the luxury of having bigger 14-man rotation during games.

This was the latest rule change, which will take effect in the upcoming 67th UAAPseason.

The original proposal was to allow each team to submit 16-man rosters that can all play. But it was narrowed down to 14. In the previous seasons, the league allowed teams to have 16 players in their lineup but only 12 could play.

Tigresses still in contention in Fr. Martin’s Cup

THE UST Tigresses evened their win-loss standing (2-2) as they routed the College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers, 80-57, in the Fr. Martin’s Cup last May 23 at the San Beda College Gym.

Veteran Juvy Salazar gave the Tigresses an early boost on the offensive end with seven points in the first quarter, mostly on inside incursions. But it was Kath Buyco who gave the Taft-based dribblers the run-around with her outstanding ball handling and a couple of steals, leaving them scoreless during the entire half of the second canto.

Softbelles yield title to Lady Falcons

THE EUPHORIA of their queen-size upset over the defending champions University of the East in the semifinals did not last long.

The UST Lady Batters’ amazing run came to an unexpected end as they were swept by the Adamson University Lady Falcons in the best-of-three finals of the UAAP softball.

In game one of the championship, the Lady Falcons rode on Loverly Parohinog’s homer in the early goings en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Lady Batters last Feb. 14 at the UST diamond.

UST Booters falter anew

DESPITE going 2-1 in their last three games, the UST Growling Booters still finished the UAAP football season with a losing record for the second straight year.

Needing a victory to have a lock on third place, the Growling Booters closed out their campaign with a bitter 1-0 loss to the Far Eastern University Tamaraw Booters last Feb. 22 at the Ateneo field.

Roy Clores played the assassin’s role as he scored the lone goal of the tightly fought match in the 55th minute.
