Growling Tigers escape San Beda, enter Fr. Martin Cup finals

June 15, 2015, 12:41 p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers banked on a late run to surge past the San Beda College Red Lions, 75-72, and enter the finals of the 21st Fr. Martin Cup at the Arellano University Gym Monday.

Down by nine in the third period, the Tigers unleashed a barrage of 3-pointers led by Kent Lao to go ahead, 70-66, with less than two minutes left.

A three-point play by Ed Daquioag sealed the win for UST.

Lao, who buried three triples in UST's fourth-quarter rally, led the Tigers with 22 points. Daquioag and Louie Vigil added 16 apiece.

Filoil: Growling Tigers weather late Pirates run

May 28, 2015, 10:02 a.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers returned to the winning column after surviving the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 72-66, in the 2015 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena Wednesday.

Lao shines anew as Growling Tigers survive Adamson Falcons

26 July 2014, 6:17 p.m. - RESERVE forward Kent Lao sank the game-winning freethrow with 1.1 seconds left as the Tigers sneaked past the Adamson Falcons, 50-49, in their UAAP men's basketball showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena, Saturday.

Lao made up for three straight charities against the struggling Falcons, who lost their third consecutive game.

"Disappointed ako dun sa mga (shots) na na-miss ko," Lao said after coming off his second crucial performance for the Growling Tigers in as many games.

With 1:57 left in the game, forward Kevin Ferrer hit two freethrows to tie the game at 49.

Reserve forward shines for UST vs FEU

With co-team captain Aljon Mariano struggling, the UST Growling Tigers found an unlikely hero in reserve forward Kent Lao in their victory against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.

Lao, who shot six of eight from the field, led the UST bench with a career-high 14 points, providing crucial buckets for the Tigers in the end-game, including the game-clinching layup.

"I was also surprised with my performance," he told the Varsitarian in Filipino. "My mindset was for us to execute all the plays and defend well."

Head coach Bong Dela Cruz acknowledged that he should have given Lao more minutes in UST's last outing, a humiliating loss to the National University.

Ferrer, Lao lead Tigers over FEU for first win of the season

20 July 2014, 8:28 p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigers withstood a late rally to fend off the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 69-67, in their UAAP Season 77 men's basketball showdown at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Sunday.

Kevin Ferrer came up with a team-high 18 points, including back-to-back treys late in the game, to lead the Growling Tigers to their first win of the season while reserve forward Kent Lao posted a career-high 14 markers off the bench capped by a game-clinching breakaway layup.

UST improved to a 1-1 win-loss card. Leading by three, 53-50, entering the fourth period, UST turned the ball over three consecutive times as FEU went on an 8-0 run for a 58-53 advantage.
