Tigresses crash out of Final 4 after loss to FEU

THE UST Growling Tigresses finished at fourth place after faltering anew in the fourth quarter with a 61-62 defeat against the Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball stepladder semifinals at the Mall of Asia Arena last Sept. 21.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Tigresses squandered several possessions that resulted in a resounding 13-2 FEU surge, capped with a Claire Castro layup to snatch the lead from UST, 60-61.

Lore Rivera managed to tie things up again at 61-all after a split from the stripe with 20 seconds remaining, but Lady Tamaraw Lorraine Ventura pushed her squad back on top with a split of her own, 61-62.

Growling Tigresses bow to FEU, end campaign at fourth place

Sept. 21, 2014, 5:17 p.m. - THE UST Growling Tigresses capped a season of close defeats with another one against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 61-62, in the step-ladder semifinals of the UAAP Season 77 women's basketball tournament at the MOA Arena, Sunday.

The Tigresses are eliminated from the Final Four, while FEU will advance to the next round of the semifinals to face defending champion De La Salle University, which is armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.

Lady Tamaraws nip Tigresses in close affair

27 July 2014, 1:00 p.m. - LORE Rivera's fourth quarter heroics were not enough as the UST Growling Tigresses fell short against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 56-57, in the first round of the UAAP Season 77 women's basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle gym, Sunday.

The loss was UST's third in four games.

Rivera registered 12 of the Tigresses' 14 fourth-quarter points, including an and-one play that put them on top, 54-53, with 3:34 remaining.

But Tamaraw Angel Arellano converted on a fastbreak play to regain the lead for FEU in the last two minutes, 57-56.

Tigresses yield to NU in a thriller

The UST Growling Tigresses had another late-game collapse and fell short against the National University Lady Bulldogs, 60-62, in their UAAP Season 77 UAAP women's basketball matchup at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym, Saturday.

The Tigresses, who were plagued by crucial turnovers in the dying seconds, remained winless in two games to start the season.

With the game tied at 60 with 30 seconds remaining, Tigress Lore Rivera turned the ball over resulting in an Afril Bernardino go-ahead basket, 60-62.

Rivera made up for her mistake by forcing an NU turnover to give UST a chance to extend the game to overtime but Maica Cortes failed to convert in fastbreak as time expired.

NU crushes UST Growling Tigers in UAAP opener

13 July 2014, 8:19 p.m. - The UST Growling Tigers and Tigresses opened their respective UAAP campaigns with disappointing defeats Sunday.

The Growling Tigers suffered a 40-59 beating against the National University Bulldogs at the SmarG-Araneta Coliseum while the Tigresses crumbled down the stretch against defending champion La Salle, 50-56, at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Tigers started slow offensively in the first half as they found themselves trailing by nine, 9-18, in the middle of the second quarter.

But Karim Abdul sparked a 12-3 UST run to tie the game at 21 before entering the half trailing by four, 21-25.

Intact Tigresses target UAAP crown

The UST Tigresses had a solid offseason highlighted by a Martin Cup title and a Filoil runner-up finish.

But can this impressive summer campaign translate to a UAAP title this season?

Coach Chris Cantonjos is making no promises, saying he prefers to take things one at a time.

“Every game we need to come out strong, even in practice,” Cantonjos said. “Our goals cannot be achieved overnight so we have to do it step-by-step. If we have to strive harder, we will strive harder.”

The Tigresses boast of a solid lineup with veteran forward Lore Rivera, center Maica Cortez, guard Kim Reyes and shooter Kristine Siapoc.
