A hit on the court

WITH a towering 5”10 frame, she dominates the net with her powerful smashes, her opponents helpless to stop her. When she leaps, expect her to pound the ball hard, fast, and precisely where she wants it to land.

Mary Jean Balse, 21, has the moves and the build of an ace volleyball player. After steering the UST Lady Spikers to a championship in the famed Shakey’s V-League conference and bagging the MVP plum, the College of Commerce student has carved a niche in the amateur volleyball scene, alongside Thomasians Roxanne Pimentel and Rubie de Leon.

Tigers dump Cardinals

NOT IN our house.

The UST Growling Tigers proved to be unaccommodating hosts as they defeated the visiting Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals 97-94 in a tune-up game at the UST Gymnasium last April 13.

Warren De Guzman scored 14 points, including seven in the final period, to help UST thwart a furious fourth quarter rally by Mapua.

Judokas gain nat’l slots

IN A BID to gain slots on the national squad, Thomasian Judokas put up a one-gold, three-bronze output at the 49th National Individual Judo Championships last March 29 and 30 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Led by 2003 University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Rookie of the Year Archie Oliver Martinez, the squad managed to salvage its campaign despite surprising early exits.

The comeback kid

QUIETLY stacking up victories in both local and international competitions, Thomasian jin Tshomlee Go has been making his case as one of the top taekwondo athletes in the country. And with a Busan Asian Games bronze and a World Cup silver under his belt, few people seem to disagree.

At this stage in his young career, Go has often elicited comparisons to Philippine team stalwart and Sydney Olympian Roberto “Kitoy” Cruz. However, Go is quick to say that he would like to make his own mark.

“Iba iyong ginawa niya. Iba iyong gagawin ko,” he said.

Lady Batters pull off miracle

DESPITE dropping all three of their elimination games to a more fancied Adamson squad, the UST Lady Batters defied the odds and scored a 7-0 victory over the Filomeno “Boy” Codiñera-mentored Lady Falcons to annex the Manila Youth Games (MYG) Softball title last April 12 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The UST Lady Batters made it to the championship game by relying on a grand-slam from up-and-coming sophomore right fielder Gedda Valencia as they creamed a lowly Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 11-0.

Destined to be rector magnificus – again

FATHER Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P. is set to return to the scene of his greatest personal and professional achievement—the rectorship of UST. But even before he became rector during his first stint in the position in 1990, he had already been an “achiever,” according to Fr. Virgilio Ojoy, OP, a former UST vice rector who was De la Rosa’s companion during his days as a Dominican seminarian and as a postgraduate student in Louvain, Belgium.

During their philosophical studies at the Dominican House of Studies (DHS) and their theological studies in UST, De la Rosa passed his exams with flying colors and collected honors replete with the usual arcane but high-sounding Latin phrases (magna cum laude in theology and summa cum laude in Master’s in Higher Religious Studies).

“His brilliant scholastic achievements prefigured his rise as rector of Asia’s oldest higher education institution,” Ojoy said.
