UST still in contention

WITH a 5-6-2 win-loss-draw card in the elimination round of Ang Liga Football Cup, the UST Golden Booters are fighting it out for a semifinals slot.

“Kayang-kaya pa naman (namin) makapasok sa semis. Tiwala naman ako sa teammates ko na kaya naming manalo basta gumawa lang lahat,” team captain Armand Esteban said.

UST, now at fifth place, scored an easy victory against reigning UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University, which was a no-show last Nov. 18 at the UST Football Field. The win-by-default gave UST a 3-0 victory.

Thomasian athletes gear up for SEA Games 2005

THIRTEEN Thomasian student-athletes and two coaches join the Philippine contingent in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

“This is an indication that UST’s sports program can produce national-caliber athletes,” IPEA Athletics moderator Felix Michael Silbor said of UST’s involvement in the biennial meet.

UST has always been well represented in the regional meet.

‘Softbelles’ surrender early?

IT IS unsurprising why Coach Sandy Baredo has humble expectations for his squad in Season 68. With a dozen rookies and only four seniors in his team, the Lady Batters coach has yet to adjust to a number of things, especially stepping into the shoes of his six departed veterans.

“Wala akong goal ngayon. Maglalaro lang muna kami sa UAAP,” Lady Batters head coach Sandy Baredo said calmly, but with an evident undertone of frustration in his voice.

UST second in UAAP race

ALTHOUGH UST may be 18 points behind perennial title contender De La Salle University (DLSU) in the general championship race, there’s no need to press the panic button just yet.

After 10 events, host school DLSU leads the pack with 122 points, while University of the Philippines is in third with 98.

But UST is hot on DLSU’s trail, with two title events in men’s table tennis and women’s swimming. It also scored four first runner-up and five second-runner-up finishes.

National teams seek UST’s help

FOUR national teams turned to the UST Center for Research on Movement Sciences (CRMS) for their physiological tests and training in preparation for next year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.

National Fencing coach Walter Torres, whose team underwent tests in UST last Nov. 4 and 5, said the Philippine Team needed new methods of training to maintain its status as a major contender in the SEA Games.

Paddlers shine in Inter-Scholastic stint

THE UST Lady Paddlers erased the bitter memory of a bridesmaid finish in the 67th Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Table Tennis wars by finishing first in the 3rd Inter-Scholastic Table Tennis Championship last Oct. 15-17 at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Human Kinetics Gym.

With Philippine Team standout Chrisma Yanga at the helm, the España-based Paddlers dismantled this year’s UAAP titlist De La Salle University (DLSU), 3-2, in a tough see-saw finals battle to exact revenge.

Commerce reigns in Judo Intrams

FEROCITY and determination became the mark of the College of Commerce and Accountancy’s campaign in the third Thomasian Goodwill Games Judo Intramurals as it captured the overall championship by bagging five gold and six silver medals.

Under the mentorship of varsity player Jeffrey Aluyen, the Commerce judokas grabbed the championship in both the women and men’s division last September.
