Lady Spikers fail to defend crown; Tiger Spikers improve

THE UST Tiger Spikers and Lady Spikers both settled for runner-up finishes in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the University of the East-Caloocan sand court.

The Tiger Spikers bowed to two-time defending champion National University (NU), 16-21, 17-21, in Game 3 of their championship series last Sept. 26. Two-time titleholders Lady Spikers lost the crown to Adamson University after being swept, 23-21, 17-21, 9-15, last Sept. 20.

The Tiger Spikers, who improved from last season’s last-place finish, had the momentum as they took Game 1, 21-15, 21-17.

UST’s Mark Gil Alfafara and Kris Roy Guzman paid no attention to the mind games employed by NU’s Josephenry Tipay and Edwin Tolentino, who were warned several times by the officials.

Big man Karim no regrets in amazing UAAP run

THE MAN who towed the Tigers to three elimination games—and almost led them to the title—could not be consoled soon after the De La Salle Green Archers outlast them in Game 3 of the UAAP Finals last Oct. 12.

Cameroonian center Karim Abdul finished with a game-high 26 points and carried the Growling Tigers, especially when team captain Jeric Teng was sidelined by injuries.

But he missed that one important basket that could have sent the game to a second overtime.

Despite being relegated to sixth place with a 4-5 record following three consecutive defeats midway through the season, the Tigers, led by Abdul, came charging back.

UST taekwondo, poomsae teams outclass foes

THE UST Lady Jins were crowned champions while two-time champions Tiger Jins failed to defend their title and settled for a runner-up finish in the UAAP taekwondo tournament at The Arena in San Juan last Sept. 25.

The Lady Jins held off a tough De La Salle University squad, 4-3, for the gold while the Tiger Jins fell short against La Salle's men's team, 3-4, and settled for silver.

All eyes were on Lady Jin Jane Narra as she entered the seventh and deciding match against her Lady Archer counterpart. Narra hurled several body blows and only let her opponent counter once for a 3-1 tally at the 1:30 mark of the first round.

Shorthanded Tiger, Lady Paddlers falter

THE UST Tiger Paddlers wound up at fourth place while the Lady Paddlers finished third in the UAAP table tennis tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University.

The shorthanded Tiger Paddlers, who failed to defend their title, took a 1-3 beating at the hands of De La Salle University, which enjoyed a twice-to-beat edge, last Oct. 2.

“Four of our main guys were gone. Two got debarred, one transferred to another school while the last one exhausted his playing years,” coach Joseph Cruz said.

The Lady Paddlers secured the bronze medal after beating Far Eastern University (FEU), 3-2, in a stepladder format.

Accountancy, Pharma reign in Goodwill

ALFREDO M. Velayo (AMV)-College of Accountancy improved from its third-place finish last year and drubbed the College of Architecture in straight sets, 25-9, 25-17, 25-13, to rule the men’s volleyball division in the Thomasian Goodwill Games at the P. Noval Gym last Sept. 24.

In the women’s division, the Faculty of Pharmacy team bagged its first title at the expense of Faculty of Engineering in four sets, 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 25-23.

The team was bannered by Ray Karl Dimaculangan, UAAP Season 71 Most Valuable Player (MVP) and former Tiger Spikers team captain.
