THE UST Tiger Spikers and Lady Spikers both settled for runner-up finishes in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the University of the East-Caloocan sand court.

The Tiger Spikers bowed to two-time defending champion National University (NU), 16-21, 17-21, in Game 3 of their championship series last Sept. 26. Two-time titleholders Lady Spikers lost the crown to Adamson University after being swept, 23-21, 17-21, 9-15, last Sept. 20.

The Tiger Spikers, who improved from last season’s last-place finish, had the momentum as they took Game 1, 21-15, 21-17.

UST’s Mark Gil Alfafara and Kris Roy Guzman paid no attention to the mind games employed by NU’s Josephenry Tipay and Edwin Tolentino, who were warned several times by the officials.

The first set was tightly contested until Alfafara followed an NU service error with an ace to mount a four-point lead, 18-14. Alexis U. Cerado and Ralph Joshua D.R. Hernandez
