MAKING the transition to the sport played by their female counterparts, UST Tiger Batters beefed up the ill-fated Manila team in the 2002 National Open Fast Pitch Softball Championships held May 7 to 12 in Nueva Ecija.

With the changes in mechanics, UST team captain Sherwin Canlas admitted to having trouble adjusting to softball.

“(Nakaka-)pagod talaga. Mas mabilis and softball. Ang lalapit pa ng bases,” the 2002 UAAP homerun leader said.

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas failed to deliver the necessary killer blows against Far Eastern University, losing a 21-16 decision to the Tamaraws, bidding farewell to their quarterfinals chances and a trip to the islands of Boracay on the final play date of the 6th Nestea Beach Volleyball Intercollegiate Championship last April 7 at the La Salle Greenhills sandcourts in San Juan.

UST and FEU were actually neck-to-neck in the early goings of the match, strategically exchanging points from the onset.

AFTER 11 games and countless at-bats, the fate of the UST Golden Sox now depends on a single strike.

The University of the Philippines Maroons, with the help of some crucial judgement calls, kept the UST Golden Sox from claiming the 2002 UAAP baseball plum last Feb. 3 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Yielding a close 8-7 decision to the defending champions, the Golden Batters are waiting for the decision of the UAAP board on a protest they filed.

IN THE first ever rematch in UAAP baseball finals history, the UST Golden Sox lost a lopsided 8-1 decision against the defending champion UP Maroons last Feb. 27 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The UAAP board ordered another encounter after erring umpires forwarded a letter of apology for allowing UP’s Rhoy Landicho to bat in the eighth inning of UST’s 8-7 loss despite the centerfielder’s third strike. In the letter, colleagues of home plate umpire Roderick Santos admitted they stuck by the latter’s wrong call for reasons of solidarity.

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas’ UAAP conquest took yet another step with the UST Lady Tennisters, in grand fashion, completing a clean-up of the tournament to claim their first-ever UAAP Women’s Tennis Title last Feb. 3 at the Valle Verde Tennis Courts in Pasig City.

Etching themselves in the league history books, the Lady Tennisters emphatically ruled the tournament by sweeping all their six elimination games.

THE UST Lady Booters failed to duplicate their last year’s third-place finish after they settled for a draw against the eventual champion Far Eastern University (FEU), 1-1, at the Ateneo Field last Feb. 13.

With the loss, they wound up fourth behind the University of the Philippines’ superior quotient. After the elimination round, UP accumulated 10 points against UST’s 8-point total.

FEU repeated as champions after blasting DLSU, 2-1, last Feb. 17.

WITH the race for overall supremacy still in contention, the Lady jins gave UST a much-needed lift as they won their third consecutive crown in the UAAP Women’s Taekwondo Tournament last Feb. 9 and 13 at the UP College of Human Kinetics Gymnasium.

Fielding in the formidable squad composed of SEA Games silver medallist Kalindi Tamayo, 2001 UAAP women’s MVP Daleen Cordero, Josephine Strachan, Diorlyn Papelera, Nancy Remollena, Anne Resurreccion and Joy Handog, the UST Lady jins hardly encountered any resistance on their way to their third straight championship.

THE ECCLESIASTICAL Faculties’ football dynasty continues to reign.

Cementing its niche on the University’s Intramurals history, the Ecclesiastical Faculties’ Football Team made it five in a row after another sensational title romp as it demolished the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), 4-0 in the final play date of the Intercollegiate Football Tournament at the UST Field last Feb. 18.

CARVING its legitimate niche in the UAAP Fencing community, the UST Fencing Team delivered an impact performance with its silver and bronze finishes in the men’s and women’s divisions last Feb. 1 to 2 at the Philsports Fencing Hall.

The University’s swordsmen stole the limelight from other top fencing schools, as they produced a decent one gold and five silver showing in their events.

FROM non-contenders, the UST Badminton Team has come a long way. The Female and Male Shuttlecockers delivered silver and bronze performances in the conclusion of the UAAP Badminton Tournament last Feb. 10 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

Failing to zero in on the championship the day before after sorry losses against fancied teams, the UST Shuttlecockers went out in grand fashion as they outclassed their respective final assignments.
