Another classic finish

DÉJÀ VU! For the past two years, the University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University seemed to be following the same trend in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) general championship race — the Green Archers sprint ahead of the pack in the first half of the season, only to be overtaken by UST in the end.

And cliché as it may sound, history repeated itself for the Taft-based University as it failed to learn from its past mistakes and succumbed once more to the ferocious Tigers’ balanced athletic attack toward the second semester.

The Tigers behind the conquest

CAPPING off another sterling run en route to its 29th UAAP General Championship, the University recognized the heroes behind the glory through the Athletic Commencement and Awards Day at the UST Gym Annex last March 16.

Key championships

A football heartbreaker

WHEN the UST Growling Booters entered the 2002 UAAP football finals, they knew they were facing daunting odds in their quest to recapture their lost crown.

Not only were the España-based Booters squaring off with the same team that dethroned them a year ago, they were doing so without reliable mid-fielder Randy Leyble, who was suspended after being slapped with a red-card violation in their previous game.

Tracksters rule National Open

SMASHING the record books anew with another impressive performance in the Women’s High Jump, South East Asian (SEA) Games silver medalist Narcisa Atienza led the way to another successful Milo National Open Track and Field Championship campaign for UST with a two gold-medal finish last May 1 to 4 at the Rizal Memorial Field.

Atienza bested her own previous 1.74 record after easily dominating her feeble opposition to put up a new record of 1.75m for the gold.

Tigers make noise in Fr. Martin’s

After failing to advance to the UAAP Final Four for the first time last year, the UST Growling Tigers are starting to display their old ferocious form as they posted a 5-1 record in the elimination round, with still a game left to clinch a semifinal slot, in the ongoing 8th Fr. Martin’s Cup at the UE gym.

The Growling Tigers carved a near flawless win-loss card by beating bracket mates San Beda-A, FEU-A, Jose Rizal University, Ateneo-B and University of Assumption.

Parting shots

THE END is the beginning is the end. And so my favorite band, the Smashing Pumpkins, says.

Every concluding chapter in my life, it never fails to give me a mixed feeling, one which I have quite some trouble comprehending.

Countdown to UST’s Quadricentinnial

UST revises its vision-mission

The University revised its vision-mission statement to strengthen UST’s resources in the tripod of academic learning: instruction, research, and community service.

UST’s refurbished vision-mission was in preparation for the University’s 400th founding anniversary in 2011.

A cut above the rest

WHEN the king of the UAAP jungle visited the Queen City of the South last April 20-27, everyone expected no less than an explosive clash – a battle royale among the finest collegiate athletes from all over the country. And when the battle-smoke cleared in this year’s Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) wars, the 29-time over-all champion University of Santo Tomas stood tall above all with its 20 golds, 20 silvers and 20 bronzes.

Lady Booters look good in pre-season rebuilding

EAGER to improve their lukewarm fourth-place finish last season, the UST Lady Booters kicked off their pre-season by upending a pesky Baguio A team, 4-3, to claim the Kick Sand Beach Football Open Tournament last April 28 at Subic Bay, Olongapo City.

Missing the services of four key players, including team captain and national mainstay Alelie Bonifacio, the Tigresses were easily manhandled by Baguio A in the elimination round as they were subdued twice by the three-time defending champions.
