SMASHING the record books anew with another impressive performance in the Women’s High Jump, South East Asian (SEA) Games silver medalist Narcisa Atienza led the way to another successful Milo National Open Track and Field Championship campaign for UST with a two gold-medal finish last May 1 to 4 at the Rizal Memorial Field.

Atienza bested her own previous 1.74 record after easily dominating her feeble opposition to put up a new record of 1.75m for the gold.

Lady Trackster Melanie Gida copped the second gold for UST in the heptathlon event, which is composed of seven events, namely the 100m hurdles, 200 meter dash, the high jump, shot put, javelin throw, the long jump, and the 800-meter run. Gida emphatically ruled the event, finishing first in all of the events, except for the 800-meter run, where she placed fourth.

Meanwhile, Josephine delos Reyes captured the silver for the local bracket of the 100-meter dash. Gida romped a silver performance in the 100-meter hurdles of the girls division.

Delos Reyes also came away with a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash for the international bracket while Atienza added another bronze to the team’s medal tally by finishing third in the javelin throw.

UST finished with two gold medals, four silvers, and four bronzes.

UST Tracksters mentor Manny Calipes is very happy with the team’s performance and stressed that the players are improving. “Continuous ang improvement ng mga players, at least nagbubunga ‘yung practice”.

He said the tournament gave UST the much-needed media exposure.

This tournament, according to Coach Calipes, also serves as a gauge for the players and the opposition, particularly the University of the East and the De La Salle University who are out to destroy UST’s “three-peat.”
