Underdogs

FOUR years in the University and I still have yet to experience a taste of the UST Growling Tigers fever. The pride of being a Thomasian with your school’s varsity team playing all out in the championship game in the country’s number one collegiate league is now a far-fetched reality.

Looking back two years ago, I now painfully regret the time when I was not able to watch the game three of the finals against the Green Archers. Now, I have accepted the excruciating truth that UST during my stay never won any championship.

Pharmacy nips Science in Volley Intrams finals

DISPLAYING class and poise down the stretch, the Faculty of Pharmacy claimed the University’s Volleyball Intramurals plum against a gritty College of Science squad in a nerve-wracking five-set encounter, 23-25, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-11, last Nov. 21 at the UST gym.

Pharmacy’s resiliency paid dividends as it never gave up despite the strong start of Science, which took the first two sets.

UST Team B overruns Arts and Letters

THE UST Varsity Team–B survived an early deficit and a late game surge by the Faculty of Arts and Letters to hack out an impressive 84-74 victory at the Basketball Intramurals last Dec. 1 at the UST Gym.

Trailing, 15-18, after the Artlets repeatedly scored on easy fastbreak plays, Team B relied on the hot shooting of swingmen Ponor Oreta and Danny Pribhdas as it unleashed a searing 22-4 assault to lead, 37-22 going into the second half.

Ustetika awards forgotten fictionist

AN ALMOST forgotten Palanca award-winning fictionist was last year’s Parangal Hagbong honoree in the Varsitarian-sponsored 17th Ustetika Annual Literary Awards last Dec. 15 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium.

The Ustetika recognized Lilia Pablo Amansec for her valuable contributions to Philippine literature. Some of her most memorable literary worksinclude her Palanca award-winning pieces “Lilies of Yesterday” (2nd place, 1957), “Dream Tiger” (2nd place, 1963), and “Loverboy” (1st place, 1964).

AB breezes through in football

THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters Booters whipped an undermanned combined team of the Graduate School and the Faculty of Civil Law (GS/CL), 5-0, in the Intercollegiate Football games last Jan. 8 at the UST Field.

With only seven minutes gone in the game, striker Christian Zosa set the tone for the lopsided victory with a goal amid a wild scramble at the penalty area.

The two teams exchanged tight defenses in the ensuing plays as the Artlets ended the first half with a 1-0 lead.

CCWS releases ‘Ustinig’

IN AN attempt to repackage literature and to make it more appealing to the MTV generation, the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies (CCWS) launched “Ustinig: Thomasian Writers Read,” a compact disc (CD) featuring Thomasian writers reading their selected works, last Feb. 15 at the Chiang Ching Kuo Conference Hall.

No sweat; UST retains UAAP overall trophy

FOR THE fourth consecutive year, UST won again the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) general championship its 18th in 21 years.

Overall, UST has won 29 general championships out of the 64 years of the UAAP, making it the most dominant presence in collegiate sports in the country.

Santo Tomas lords it over in first Tiger Cup

HIGHLIGHTING the maiden week-long celebration of the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA), the UST Fencing Team held the University banner sky-high above other schools in the first-ever Tiger Cup Fencing Tournament last Mar. 5 at the Engineering Complex.

Dominating the competition of amateur fencers from different schools and universities around Metro Manila, the Thomasian fencers garnered a whopping six gold medals tally, six silvers and four bronzes.

Sox battered in rematch

the MUCH-anticipated UAAP baseball finals between UST and the University of the Philippines ended up in disappointing rout for the former as the Diliman-based Batters subdued the Golden Sox with an 8-1 victory last Feb. 27 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Despite scoring the game’s first run, the España-based squad’s campaign ended in a whimper as the Maroons employed a tight-knit defense that left the Tiger Batters scoreless in eight straight innings.

Tennisters give team All-Star a good fight

LOCAL celebrities teamed up with four of the country’s best tennis players and slugged it out with the recently-crowned UAAP champions, the UST Tennisters, during the third leg of the first-ever 96.3 WRock University Challenge last Mar. 8 at the UST Tennis Courts.
