DISPLAYING class and poise down the stretch, the Faculty of Pharmacy claimed the University’s Volleyball Intramurals plum against a gritty College of Science squad in a nerve-wracking five-set encounter, 23-25, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-11, last Nov. 21 at the UST gym.

Pharmacy’s resiliency paid dividends as it never gave up despite the strong start of Science, which took the first two sets.

Capitalizing on two costly errors by their opponents toward the end of the final set, Pharmacy clinched the title after Science’s Kristopher Glenn Venzuela committed a service error.

Science was on the way to a cruising route after decisively taking the first two sets. But James Malcom Castro’s ground-shaking kills lifted Pharmacy from the grave as the Pharmacy ace spiker started the third set on the right foot, reeling off seven consecutive points to eventually win the set and shift the momentum on their side.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Science spikers, who blew a golden chance to annex the crown in the previous game after taking a five-point lead in the final set, 10-5, only to lose because of a spate of unforced errors.

Science took game one, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-12, but yielded game two, 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 13-15.

In the women’s division, College of Education repulsed an attempted comeback by Faculty of Engineering to take the women’s title in five sets, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25, 15-13.

Education took game two in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15, after losing the opening game. With reports from John Ferdinand T. Buen
