THOMASIAN fencers again made the country proud after registering podium finishes in the 2006 Southeast Asian Fencing Championships (SEAFC) last May 13-20 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Representing the RP team, the UST fencers hauled three gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals against their 23rd Southeast Asian Games competitors.

RP chessers suit up for UST

WITH inclusion of two national masters in their lineup, the UST Lady Woodpushers are a lock to repeat as UAAP champions, at least on paper.

The Philippine team standouts Shercila and Sherily Cua are set to join Lady Woodpushers Romelin Guerra, Maria Zayrah de la Cruz, Geneline de Ramos, and Anabelle Garcia in their title-retention bid when the UAAP Season 69 Chess tournament opens in August.

Former football coach now Asian soccer official

A SUCCESSFUL athlete and coach from the national ranks, Golden Booters head coach Nonnoy Carpio is now set to make use of his football knowledge in the international arena when he works for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as a development officer for goalkeeping starting this June.

UST wins Intercollegiate crown

RUST MAY have slowed them a little. But the UST Lady Spikers’ resiliency kept them going, as they swept the 2006 National Intercollegiate Volleyball tournament last May 13-19 at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) gym.

The UAAP Season 68 fourth placers, who had not competed in tournaments since November, capped the first phase of its UAAP warm-up with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13 bashing of the University of Cordillera Lady Jaguars in the finals.

Fierce Tiger Dragons cop another victory

THE UST Tiger Dragons Rowing Crew capped the school year in winning fashion, steering its way to a silver medal in the fifth Inter-collegiate Manila Sea Sports Festival last March 26 at the Manila Bay.

The España-based rowers’ bridesmaid tag came with a new team record of three minutes and 7.06 seconds in the 750-m course, an improvement from their previous record of five minutes. De La Salle University won the race with a 3:00.97 mark, while San Beda College was third with 3:07.44.

Judokas in roster trouble

FOR COACH Jojo Arce, defying the odds has become the trademark of the UST Judo teams.

But this time, the multi-titled mentor is convinced that grappling with the inevitable task of personnel overhaul during the off-season to replace his stalwarts is just one of the many challenges in the UAAP next season.

IPEA backs beleaguered lady jin

EVEN as the Philippine Taekwondo Association slapped UST lady jin Esther Singson with a three-month for banned substance use, prior to the Southeast Asian Games, the University continued to give solid support to its beleaguered athlete.

The 20-year-old Thomasian had earlier admitted that she had been taking a slimming tea prior to the biennial multi-sports meet. Singson tested positive for diuretics, a banned substance usually found in slimming tea.

Cubs discover new rhythm

A PREDATOR’S debut.

The UST Tiger Cubs made mincemeat of a listless Far Eastern University-B Junior Tamaraws squad, 91-50, to jumpstart its campaign in the 12th Fr. Martin’s Cup 2006 Nike Summer League last April 22 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym.

Armed with a relentless half-court trapping defense, the Tiger Cubs virtually sealed the deal as early as the end of the third quarter after posting the biggest lead of the game at 75-40.

Tiger’s heroics save lives

HE WAS not the go-to-guy. He did not save games for the Tigers, but on a mundane Black Saturday, he saved two lives at the expense of his.

After rescuing the relatives of girlfriend Thereene Aggabao from electrocution, Growling Tigers guard John Lee Apil, 21, died of severe electric shock and burns last April 15 in a resort in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

UST’s finest athletes in Season 68

UST concluded another season of collegiate sports domination as award-winning Thomasian student-athletes ushered the University towards another successful UAAP general championship campaign.

The table-smashing tandem of Paddlers Jimboy Baring and Princess Paña led UST’s pack of UAAP Most Valuable Player award recipients. Jimboy, brother of Season 67 MVP and RP team member Harold, made his final year more thrilling by ushering the Tiger Paddlers to a 14-game sweep of the elimination round toward an unprecedented fourth consecutive table tennis title in the league.
