Lady Booters finish second

THE CROWN came so near yet so far for the UST Lady Booters as they fell short of dethroning arch nemesis De La Salle University (La Salle) Booters in a heartbreaking 1-2 loss last Feb. 22 at the Ateneo College Football Field.

Playing in their first finals stint since 2000, Coach Jade Bejemino’s squad looked deadset to win, after drawing first blood with Mary Ignacio’s goal in the third minute.

CHAMPION AGAIN!

CHANGE is the only thing permanent in the world, but the revolving UAAP general championship trophy is not going anywhere this year as UST won its eighth consecutive general championship, its 33rd out of the UAAP’s 68 years.

UST Fencers nailed to fourth

THE UST Fencing squads held on to fourth place with a 1-1-6 gold-silver-bronze medal tally in the two-day UAAP fencing tournament at the Blue Eagle Gymnasium last Feb. 11-12.

Starting the preliminaries in good form, UST rammed into superior opposition in the ensuing matches and suffered dismal performances in some divisions to settle for a non-medal finish like last year.

Thomasian RP jin in hot water for alleged drug use

SHE FOUGHT tooth and nail to give the country its first Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) taekwondo gold medal, only to find out two months later that she could be stripped of the title.

Thomasian Esther Marie Singson, the SEAG 2005 bantamweight division titlist, is in danger of losing her medal after coming out positive for diuretics in a urinalysis conducted by the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine (PCSM) after the biennial multi-sports meet.

Sports lab inaugurated

WITH THE creation of the UST Sports Science laboratory under its auspices, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) will now play a major role in the physical conditioning of the University’s athletes.

CRS instructor Angelito Guilas said the new facility should provide a better sports training program for athletes, improving their performance.

Tigers faring well in off-season

DESPITE having a tough off-season schedule, the hard-fighting UST Growling Tigers are showing that they can be a force to reckon with next season.

With balanced scoring and a surprisingly improved defense, the Growling Tigers dominated in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games, scoring an average of 84.2 points per game. The Tigers won all its eight games in the tournament.

UST Tracksters place second

FROM cellar-dwellers to legitimate contenders, the UST Tracksters bucked their sixth place standing last season, finishing second with 197 points from a 9-3-4 gold-silver-bronze medal tally in the UAAP Season 68 athletics tournament from Feb. 9 to 12 at the Rizal Memorial Complex.

Defending champion Far Eastern University triumphed anew with 256 points, including seven golds, six silvers, and six bronze medals.

Despite earning more golds, UST fell short in the points tally that determined the event’s overall champion.

Lady Booters face La Salle in finals

The UST Lady Booters earned the right to battle in the UAAP Season 68 Football finals by outplaying defending champion and finalist De La Salle University, 1-0, last Feb. 15 at the Ateneo de Manila University (Ateneo) Field.

Coach Jade Bejemino’s wards closed the second round with a 3-3-2 win-loss-draw tally. Their victims, meanwhile, ended up with a superior 4-2-2 record for a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals.

UST surrenders crown, Lady Tennisters falter anew

THE UST Tennisters succumbed to perennial threat De La Salle University in the finals of the UAAP Season 68 tennis tournament men’s and women’s division.

The Lady Tennisters fell short in their see-saw battle against La Salle, 2-3, last Feb. 19 at the Rizal Racquet Club in Pasig City, absorbing their fourth consecutive finals defeat in the league.

Judokas exact revenge

RECOVERING from their dismal campaign last year, the fierce UST judo teams placed first and second places in the UAAP judo tournament finals last Feb. 12 at the University of the Philippines (UP) Human Kinetics Gym.

The Lady Judokas, last season’s third-placers, dethroned defending champion UP to win their third UAAP championship in four years.

Tagged as the tournament’s dark horses, the wards of coach Jojo Arce proved to be pillars of strength, foiling UP’s title-retention bid.
