Golden Sox aim for back-to-back

THE UST Golden Sox are back in the finals, waking up just in time to defeat Ateneo de Manila University in the UAAP baseball tournament semifinals last Feb. 19 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium ballpark.

With the score tied at five after six innings, UST IX lit up the scoreboard with four runs at the top of the last inning. Pitcher Jun Robles had a two RBI triple, while catcher Jake Cumlat and first baseman Jerby Diego accounted for an RBI each.

UST’s defense blanked Ateneo at the bottom of the last inning.

Pido Jarencio is new Tigers coach

WITH the Growling Tigers finishing at the cellar of the UAAP cage wars in the last two years, UST has decided to let head coach Reonel Parado go in favor of retired professional cager Alfredo “Pido” Jarencio.

A Glowing Goldie from 1981 to 1984, Jarencio was officially named men’s senior team coach last Feb. 21, ending weeks of speculation.

On that same day, Jarencio had his first meeting with his wards after the Tigers battled the UST All-Star Champions to draw 113-all.

Shuttlecockers keep UAAP title

THE TIGER Shuttlecockers are creating a dynasty of their own, defeating arch-rival Far Eastern University (FEU), 3-2, toward a dramatic back-to-back UAAP championship last Feb. 19 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

With the team score tied at 2-2, MVP Alfredo Mailon approached the tension-filled deciding singles match in outstanding form and intensity, edging out RP team shuttler Mark Alvin Natividad in a pulsating 15-4, 11-15, and 15-9 finish.

UST jins deliver ‘four-peat’

THE UST jins reigned supreme in the UAAP taekwondo tournament as they emerged champions in the men’s, women’s, and junior’s division last Feb.1 at the UST gym.

Despite the controversy hounding Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Esther Marie Singson and the sudden departure of a key player, the Lady Jins stood tall and swept their way to a third consecutive UAAP title.

“Those things only made us stronger. We were able to conquer the odds,” head coach Dindo Simpao said.

Tiger Dragons win bronze medal

THE TIGER Dragons, short-staffed at that, captured the bronze medal in the JAM 88.3 Dragonboat Regatta inter-collegiate division last Jan. 22 at the Manila bay.

Despite racing with a handicap (they fielded only 18 rowers, including six females, instead of a 20-man crew), the Tiger Dragons registered two minutes and twenty six seconds in the 500-m race course, just four seconds behind second-placer San Beda College. The De La Salle University rowers triumphed at 2:06.

UST Golf Club established

THOMASIAN golfers may again get a chance to display their skills on the fairways.

Faculty of Medicine and Surgery regent Fr. Jerry Manlangit, O.P. is organizing the Thomasian Golfers Association, a golf club that would serve as training ground for the University’s representatives in various golf tournaments.

The organization is currently accepting members, however, Manlangit said only players with 24 and under handicaps can join.

“We are looking for players who at least have some experience in the game,” Manlangit said.

Tigers target finals berth

THE UST Growling Tigers bungled an opportunity to force a two-way tie at first place when they succumbed to the league-leading San Beda College (San Beda) Red Lions, 42-52, last Jan. 22 at the Far Eastern University Gym in the Fr. Martin’s Cup eliminations.

The Tigers, now with a 5-2 win-loss card, are in solo second, while the Red Lions maintain an unblemished 6-0 slate.

Despite measly contribution from Jojo Duncil and Jemal Vizcarra, UST still kept pace with the Lions, trailing by just a precarious point at the end of the third quarter.

UST Booters notch top spots

THE UST Lady Booters are definitely out for the kill in the UAAP Season 68 football tournament.

Now at solo first with a 2-1-0 win-loss-draw slate, Coach Jade Bejemino’s wards edged the hard-fighting Far Eastern University (FEU) Booters, 1-0, last Jan. 22 at the Ateneo de Manila University (Ateneo) College Football Field.

UST’s Olivia Malabanan struck in the 90th minute to salvage the win for the Season 67 third-placers.

Eng’g dethrones Commerce

THE FACULTY of Engineering unseated defending champion College of Commerce in a hair-raising 76-74 victory in the Thomasian Goodwill Games Basketball Intramurals finals last Jan. 13 at the UST gym.

After being down for three quarters, Engineering, led by Victor Emmanuel Queyquep and Erwin Cornejo, intensified its defense in the final quarter, limiting Commerce to a measly 14 points against its 25.

Slotman Queyquep, who was adjudged the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, finished with 19 points, while Cornejo chipped in 16 markers.

Judokas vow vengeance

THIS season, the Tiger Judokas hopes to score their seventh UAAP title in eight years, but with the odds against them, the grueling task seems an unlikely possibility.
