October 11, 2015, 8:28p.m. – THE UST Lady Spikers registered back-to-back victories in the UAAP Season 78 women’s beach volleyball tournament at the Sands SM by the Bay Sunday.
UST devoured the University of the East Lady Warriors, 21-4, 21-3, and University of the Philippines Lady Fighting Maroons, 21-15, 21-12.
UST’s Cherry Rondina and Rica Jane Rivera tandem recorded an impressive 18 service aces in their game against UE.
The Lady Warriors were trailing by only a point early in the final frame but the Lady Spikers erupted with a 16-0 run to close the set.
A service ace from Rivera, also the Season 77 Rookie of the Year, punctuated UST’s third win.
Against UP, UST built a comfortable lead in the second set but the Lady Maroons uncorked a late 7-1 run to close the gap, 19-14.
Rondina sealed the win after a powerful down-the-line hit.
The Lady Spikers were holding a slim 14-11 lead in the middle of the opening set until they unleashed a 6-0 run to win the first set.
Rondina anchored the Lady Spikers against UP with 16 points while Rivera tallied 17 points against UE.
“Nawala ‘yung pattern namin [the past games kaya] inadjust lang namin ngayon. ‘Yung services namin gumana (today),” UST Lady Spikers captain Rondina told the Varsitarian.
The UST Lady Spikers will face the Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles on October 16, Friday, at the same venue.
