Oct. 8 2016, 3:05 p.m. – THE UST Junior Tiger Spikers pummeled the FEU Baby Tamaraws, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, to open the second round of the UAAP Season 79 boys’ volleyball tournament at the Adamson University Gym Saturday.

The Junior Spiker delivered 53 kills, nine aces and seven blocks against FEU to improve to a 7-1 win-loss card.

FEU could have extended the game, leading 19-17 in the fourth set, but UST went on an 8-1 run to seal the win.

“We relaxed in the third set at naging complacent ‘yung players natin. The good thing is, na-regain nila ‘yung composure to win the fourth set,” UST assistant coach Rommel Abella told the Varsitarian.

Rey de Vega led UST with 17 points while Jaron Requinton added 16. Team captain Lorenz Señoron and Teo De Guzman combined for 20 points.

With the game tied at 13-all in the third set, the Baby Tamaraws ignited an 8-1 run to pull away for good and prevent a shutout loss.

The Junior Tigers controlled the tempo in the second salvo, 22-17, until FEU retaliated with 6-2 blitz to trail by just one point, 23-24.

Requinto closed the door on a possible FEU comeback with an off-the-block hit to give the Tiger Spikers a 2-0 set lead.

UST will face the De La Salle Zobel tomorrow, Sunday, 9 a.m., at the same venue.
