THE UST Tiger Spikers drubbed the San Beda Red Lions, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 in the 1st Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

The Tiger Spikers overcame a five-point deficit in the fourth set via a 13-5 run highlighted by Joshua Umandal’s kill to bounce back from last game’s loss.

The Red Lions led 14-7 in the third frame before UST staged a late rally to come within striking distance, but an Umandal error gave San Beda its lone set win, 25-23.

The Tiger Spikers broke free from San Beda midway in the second set after a 12-7 run capped by a Red Lion error, 25-20.

A service error from San Beda’s Mark Santos allowed the Tiger Spikers to gain first blood in the first canto.

“On track kami in terms sa passing and serving although erratic siya. Nagagalit pa rin ako ng kaunti kasi nag-e-easy serve kasi sila sa end game. Pinapaalis ko ‘yun,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said.

Despite committing 42 errors, UST had 55 attack points and 10 service aces.

The Tiger Spikers’ towering net defense yielded nine blocks while the Red Lions had four.

Manuel Medina led UST with 17 points while Arnold Bautista added 16 markers.

Mark Enciso paced San Beda with 14.

UST improved to a 3-3 win-loss record for fourth place, tied with De La Salle University. San Beda dropped to fifth with a 2-3 card.

The Tiger Spikers’ last assignment will be against the winless College of St. Benilde Blazers on Oct. 2, Saturday, 8 a.m. at the same venue.
