Junior Tiger Spikers sweep UP

THE UST Junior Tiger Spikers breezed past the University of the Philippines Junior Maroons, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16, in the UAAP Season 80 boys’ volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan Sunday.

UST unloaded a 19-9 run to pull away for good in the third set, sealed by Efraem Dimaculangan’s crosscourt kill.

“We played relaxed but focused. During training sinabi na namin na ‘everybody be ready’ kasi lahat ipapasok, lahat gagamitin,” UST assistant coach Rommel Abella said.

The Junior Spikers used a 19-8 run to create separation midway of the second frame, before an error from UP’s Ron Castro gave UST a 2-0 set lead.

UST started out strong with a 16-11 advantage in the opening salvo, before uncorking a 9-3 blitz capped by Charles Segui’s crosscourt hit.

Dimaculangan chalked up 10 points while Segui and Jaron Requinton both had seven to help UST improve to a 4-1 win-loss record.

Carlos Landeras led the the Maroons with five markers.

UST will next face the Ateneo de Manila University on Oct. 4, Wednesday, 12 nn, at the same venue.
