The Cignal HD Spikers pummeled the Victoria-Sports UST Golden Tigresses, 26-24, 25-16, 25-14, in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Arena in San Juan Saturday.
The HD Spikers finished the elimination round with a 3-5 slate while UST ended its PSL stint winless in eight games.
With the HD Spikers in full control of the third set, 25-14, import Alexis Mathews delivered the final blow with a block.
Cignal had a slim two-point lead in the second frame, 17-15, before staging an 8-1 run topped by a service ace from Royse Tubino to take a 2-0 set advantage.
The HD Spikers erased a five-point UST lead in the first set with an 11-4 blitz capped by Alexis Matthews’ check ball, 26-24.
“Alam ko ‘tong mga batang ‘to, marami silang nakuha sa mga games na nangyari dito sa tournament. Blessing itong tournament na to para sa kanila para ma-prepare namin [sila] para sa UAAP,” UST head coach Paul Jan Doloiras said.
Cignal utilized UST’s faulty reception with eight aces.
Alexis Mathews chipped in 19 markers for the HD Spikers.
Carla Sandoval had 10 points for UST.
