THE UST Golden Tigresses mauled the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, for their first win in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday.
Top spiker Cherry Rondina finished the match with a through-the-block kill to prevent a UE comeback in the third set, 25-21.
The Tigresses opened the second set with a 16-5 run and never looked back, as Lady Warrior Mary Ann Mendrez’s attack error gave UST a 2-0 set lead.
“Magandang bounce back ito coming from the five-set (loss against La Salle). Na-excecute namin ‘yung service namin kahit papaano at bumaba service error namin,” UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes Jr. said.
Mendrez’s service error ended the first set in favor of UST, 25-17.
Despite the win, Reyes noted that the team needed to polish their consistency.
The Tigresses committed 16 errors while forcing 26 on UE.
Cherry Ann Rondina dazzled anew to lead all scorers with 20 points while Dimdim Pacred added eight markers.
Mendrez led UE with 10 points.
Up next for the Tigresses are the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles on February 11, Sunday, 4 p.m., at the same venue.
