Tiger Spikers bow down to Ateneo

THE ATENEO de Manila University Blue Eagles swept the UST Tiger Spikers, 25-11, 25-21, 25-21, in the UAAP Season 80 men’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday.

The Blue Eagles finished off UST in the third set with a 6-3 spurt, capped by Marck Espejo’s crosscourt kill, 25-21.

Back-to-back kills from Gian Glorioso in the second salvo allowed the Blue Eagles to take a 2-0 set lead.

Ateneo started strong with a 16-8 advantage in the opening canto, before uncorking a 9-3 blitz that ended with a UST attack error, 25-11.

“The setter has definitely lost his will to win…kaya nag-lead sa detriment of the whole team,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said.

The Blue Eagles dominated the blocking department with nine points while UST had five.

Espejo and Ron Medalla paced Ateneo with 15 markers apiece.

Joshua Umandal and Jayvee Sumagaysay combined for nine points for the Tiger Spikers.

The Blue Eagles remained at second place behind a 10-2 win-loss card while the Tiger Spikers absorbed their seventh loss in 12 games.

The Tiger Spikers will try to bounce back against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on April 11, Wednesday, 10 a.m., at the Arena in San Juan.
