Junior Tigresses advance to UST Invitational finals

THE UST Junior Golden Tigresses secured a finals slot in the inaugural UST invitational volleyball tournament after making quick work of Arellano University Baby Chiefs, 25-15, 25-18, 25-13, at the UST Padre Noval Court Saturday.

The Junior Golden Tigresses will face the winner of the semifinal match between Far Eastern University and Hope Christian School tomorrow, 3 p.m. at the UST Training Center.

“[May blocking] na and may good first ball kami kanina kaya madali lang kami nakapag-set up ng mga play [against Arellano],” Junior Golden Tigresses assistant coach Ian Fernandez said.

In boys’ play, the Junior Tiger Spikers got eliminated by rivals Nazareth School of National University Bullpups, 25-21, 25-21, 29-27.

Tied at 27-27, NU scored two straight points courtesy of a UST error and a quick hit by Bullpup Lorence Cruz.

Errors got the best of the Junior Tiger Spikers, committing 13 out of their 28 errors in the second set alone.

After tying the game at 20-all, UST gave away four errors in a 5-1 run by the Bullpups.

John Sumalinog paced NU with nine points.

UST’s Rey De Vega led all scorers with 12 points.

The Junior Tiger Spikers will face the winner of the semifinal match of NU’s Team B pool and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Squires in the battle-for-third, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
