THE UST Tiger Spikers picked up their eighth-straight victory after escaping the Arellano University Chiefs, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 14-25, 15-8, in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

The Tiger Spikers stayed atop the standings with an 8-0 win-loss record while Arellano remained winless in eight games.

Leading 10-5 in the fifth frame, UST pulled away for good using a 5-3 spurt, sealed by Tyrone Carodan’s quick kill.

“Noong fourth set kasi, in-explore ko kung saan ilalagay ang mga players ko kaya ganoon nangyari kaya noong fifth set, [binalik ko sa dating positions] ‘yung line up,” Tiger Spikers head coach Odjie Mamon said.

The Chiefs had a slim one-point lead in the fourth set, 6-5, before igniting a 19-9 bomb, capped by a service error from UST’s Hernel Corda to force a decider.

Joshua Umandal led the Tiger Spikers with 16 points while Carodan added 14 markers.

Arellano’s Zachery Dablo led all scorers with 18 points.

UST will try to end the elimination round undefeated against the National University Bulldogs on Aug. 26, Sunday, 9 a.m., at the same venue.
