Junior Tiger Spikers ground UP

THE UST Junior Tiger Spikers mauled the University of the Philippines Integrated School Junior Maroons, 25-12, 25-15, 25-19, for their third-straight win in the UAAP Season 81 boys’ volleyball tournament at the Far Eastern University-Diliman Gym Sunday.

The Junior Spikers improved to a 7-4 win-loss card for second place in the standings while the Junior Maroons remained winless in 11 outings.

Trailing 9-12 in the third canto, UST went on a 16-7 blitz, sealed by CJ Segui’s crosscourt kill for the win.

“They finally realized how important it is to win kaya lumabas ‘yong totoong laro nila and they really followed our instructions,” Junior Spikers assistant coach Rommel Abella told the Varsitarian.

Leading 13-10 in the second frame, UST unleashed a 12-5 run, capped by an attack error from UP’s Samuel Sylvestre to gain a 2-0 set advantage.

The Junior Spikers sparked a 16-8 run, topped by Rey de Vega’s down-the-line kill to take the first set, 25-12.

UST dominated the service department with 14 aces while UP only had one.

The Junior Spikers’ towering net defense -also yielded four blocks while the Junior Maroons had none. 

Segui led all scorers with seven points while de Vega, Xoi Basilio, John Narciso and Gabriel Trinidad had six points apiece for UST.

Silvestre had six points for the Junior Maroons.

The Junior Spikers will next face the Adamson University Baby Falcons on Nov. 21, Wednesday, 3 p.m., at the Blue Eagle Gym.
