UE escapes Tiger Spikers

AN ERROR-PLAGUED UST Tiger Spikers bowed down to the University of the East Red Warriors, 25-27, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 15-17, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan Sunday.

The Tiger Spikers committed 50 errors while the Red Warriors had 34.

UST suffered its second-straight defeat and slid to fifth place behind a 3-4 win-loss card while UE improved to sixth with a 2-5 slate.

With the final frame tied at 15-all, the Red Warriors fired a two-point swing, sealed by Adrian Imperial’s block kill to finish the game.

“It was not the usual line-up kaya walang chemistry ngayon. Nadagdagan pa ng pressure kaya maraming errors,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said.

The Tiger Spikers broke a 13-all deadlock in the fourth set using a 12-5 blitz, topped by Jerald Tajanlangit’s quick kill to force a decider.

Team captain Manuel Medina’s service error in the third canto allowed UE to take a commanding 2-1 set advantage, 25-23.

Trailing 20-22 in the second salvo, UST ignited a 6-2 spurt, capped by Jayvee Sumagaysay’s quick kill to equalize the game at one set apiece.

Red Warrior Lloyd Josafat’s quick kill in the first set enabled UE to grab the upper hand early, 27-25.

Medina had a game-high 30 points for the Tiger Spikers.

Josafad paced UE with 16 markers.
