Tiger Spikers halt losing skid

FOUR TIGER Spikers scored in double-digits as UST arrested its four-game losing streak at the expense of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

The Tiger Spikers finished off the Fighting Maroons in the fourth frame with a 10-6 blast, capped by a UP error, 25-15.

“Disappointed ako sa second set, kasi lamang kami and we lost focus pero malaking bagay na bumalik na si Jaron Requinton at back to normal na [ang scoring ng team],” UST head coach Odjie Mamon told the Varsitarian.

Requinton’s crosscourt hit in the third set gave the Tiger Spikers a commanding 2-1 set advantage, 25-20.

Jayvee Sumagaysay’s service error in the second salvo allowed the Fighting Maroons to even the game to one-set apiece.

Holding a slim 18-15 lead the opening canto, UST went on a 7-2 run, topped by an attack error from UP to gain high ground early, 25-17.

The Tiger Spikers had a 10-5 advantage in the blocking department, while also outscoring the Fighting Maroons in services, 7-2.

Requinton and Joshua Umandal paced UST with 20 points each, while team captain Manuel Medina and Sumagaysay had 15 and 13 markers, respectively.

Jerry San Pedro led UP with 14 points.

The Tiger Spikers tied the De La Salle University at fifth place and improved to a 4-6 win-loss card.

UST will next face the Adamson University Soaring Falcons on April 6, Saturday, 8 a.m., at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
