Junior Golden Tigresses survive La Salle-Zobel in five-set thriller

THE UST Junior Golden Tigresses outlasted the De La Salle-Zobel Junior Lady Spikers to pull off a tight 25-16, 12-25, 22-25, 25-17, 19-17 victory in the UAAP season 82 girls’ volleyball tournament at the Paco Arena Saturday.

Jullana Carreon’s service ace sealed the victory for UST.

The Junior Tigresses forced a decider after a 3-1 run capped by Renee Peñafiel’s off-the-block hit in the fourth set.

Down 7-17 in the third salvo, the Junior Golden Tigresses used a 15-5 run to force a 22-all deadlock but the Lady Spikers answered with a 3-0 blitz to pocket the set.

Ahead by four in the second frame, 7-3, the Junior Lady Spikers ignited an 18-9 run to pull away and tie the game at a set apiece.

After building a 20-14 lead, UST went on a 5-2 blast capped by a Carreon down-the-line kill to give UST the first set.

UST had to overcome 41 errors- seven more than DLS-Z’s 34- to seal the victory.

Regina Jurado and Peñafiel led UST with 20 and 15 markers, respectively.

Angel Anne Canino posted 19 points for DLS-Z.

UST remained second in the standings with a 9-2 win-loss record while DLS-Z slipped to fifth behind a 4-6 slate.

UST will next face the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws on Oct. 23, Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. at the same venue.
