THE UST Tiger Spikers made quick work of the University of Perpetual Help Altas to notch their second straight win in the 2023 V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15, at the Paco Arena on Friday, Aug. 25.

Up by two, 13-11, the Tiger Spikers completed the sweep with a 12-4 blast capped by a Sherwin Umandal crosscourt kill in the third frame, 25-15.

Gboy de Vega scored two single blocks that sent UST to set point in the second set before Perpetual’s Jefferson Marapoc unleashed a combination play to stay alive, 24-19.

De Vega scored the finisher after pulling off a combination play of his own, giving the Tiger Spikers a two-sets-to-none advantage, 25-19.

With UST at set point, 24-16, the Altas made a quick 3-0 run in the first salvo but a costly Sean Codeniera service error handed the Tiger Spikers the one-set lead, 25-19.

Josh Ybañez led UST with 14 markers, while de Vega and Umandal scored 10 points apiece.

Marapoc paced the Altas with 15 points. He was the lone Perpetual player in double digits.

“It’s not really about the chemistry, it’s more about the discipline and the mastery of the system…Kung ma-master na nila ‘yon, and then we go to perfection,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon told the Varsitarian

The Tiger Spikers will next face Emilio Aguinaldo College at the same venue on Aug. 30, Wednesday, at 12 noon. Emmanuel John B. Abris
