THE UST Golden Tigresses made quick work of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18, in the 2023 Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, Oct. 22.

With the win, the Golden Tigresses secured a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

It took eight deadlocks early in the third salvo before Tigresses pulled away with a game-sealing 16-9 run capped by a Regina Jurado through-the-block kill and a Jonna Perdido single block that completed the sweep.

Kyla Cordora stepped up for the Tigresses’ second unit, scoring six points in the second frame.

After a Gena Hora backrow attack tied the second set at 16-all, the Tigresses went on a 9-5 spurt to take a two-sets-to-none lead.

Eleven attack points and three block points highlighted UST’s dominant 25-15 first-set win.

“Coming into the quarterfinals, mas magiging strict ako sa ensayo,” UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes told the Varsitarian. “Itutuloy-tuloy lang namin ‘yong program hanggang sa maging consistent and mag-level up pa ang team.”

No player from either team scored in double digits.

Perdido and Cordora scored nine and seven markers for UST, respectively. UST’s setter Cassie Carballo had 15 excellent sets.

Zey Pacia paced Ateneo with only five points.
